Glick and Chaplick Families

Another large family  and more cousins: Glick and Chaplick  Family

This started with a picture postcard addressed to my grandparents. Through Viewmate , part of Jewishgen, the Yiddish was translated.
Front Row:
Hannah ( Chana), Sonia's daughter
Harry Aron Chaplick
Back Row:
Sonia Gilick/Gillick/ Gillik/Glick
Louis Chaplick
Jacob Chaplick
Zena Glick Chaplick

Translated from the back of the postcard, addressed to my grandparents, Sophie Gillick and Meyer Endler:
To our dear cousin Sofyeh and cousin
Meyer Hendler and family
a souvenir of the Bar Mitzvah
of Aharon Tchaplik
from us Yakov, Zeena, Louis, Harry Tchaplik
Sonia Chana Gillik
Toronto, February 21, 1936

Left to Right: Morris Chaplick,Kay Walker, wife of Morris, Ida Chaplick, wife of David, David Glick, Norman Glick, son of David and Ida, Jacob Chaplick, Harry Chaplick, son of Jacob and Zena, Zena Glick, Hannah, daughter of Sonia Glick, Louis Chaplick, Jennie Reisman, wife of Louis, Charna Sugarman, mother of Jennie and Bella, Bella Reisman, Sonia Glick

Through finding an amazing 50th Anniversary celebration notice in the Canadian Jewish Review and discovering the descendants, I was able to find someone who could identify family members in this picture postcard. However the cousin Sonia who wrote the Bar Mitzvah postcard remains elusive. She is with her daughter Hanna in the pictures. When did she die and where is she buried? How are they related to my grandmother?
Moshe Pinchus Glick had 4 children: Zena, David, Sonia and Yaakov. Moshe’s father was Yankel  (Yaakov ) and his father was Pinchas.

I did find the index of Sonia's birth record, her name was Sura Gilyk and she was born 28 Feb 1905 in Kishinev, Bessarabia.
In her daughter Hannah's July 1948 Border Crossing, she is the contact person and her name is given as Sonia Feldman who lived at 373 Markham St, Toronto. In the 1966 celebration of her parents' 50th anniversary, Sonia and her husband are referred to as Mr. and Mrs. I Feldman. With them was Pearl, perhaps a daughter of Sonia's husband's first marriage.

Hannah was born 21 May 1927 in Kishinev. She died 1 Dec 2012. In her obituary I discovered that her father's first name was Aron. A relative told me that in her eulogy, she found out that Hannah's father died when Hannah was 4 and she grew up as an only child.

Gillicks from Massachusetts

A Gillick Branch in Boston

 Volko ( William/ Velvel/ Valbel/ Wolf ) Gillick, born 1860 and wife Pize/ Anna, born in 1863, had
3 daughters, Pearl, born 1883, Chana born 1899 and Sarah, born 29 Apr 1901.

Volko and Pize left Liverpool, England 12 May 1927 on S.S. Samaria and arrived in Boston, 21 May 1927. They were going to their daughter Pearl, her husband, Elias Sohn and their daughter Clara, born in 1912. The family lived at 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea, Massachusetts.

Chana ( Hanna ) Gillick arrived on the S.S.Canada on 21 Sep 1921. She was destined to her cousin, Louis Gillick, 34 Oliver St, Sherbrooke. In her Border Crossing in Oct 1922, through St Albans, Vermont, she headed for her sister Sura ( Sarah ) and her sister's husband Sam Mindick at 46 Market St, Brighton, Massachusetts

Sarah Gillick sailed 21 Jun 1921 on the  S.S. Sicilian. She gave the name of her father as Welwel from Ostropol. She was heading to her cousins, Louis Gillick and Joseph Gillick at 49 Oliver St., Sherbrooke, Quebec. She married Sam Mindick, 6 Jun 1922 in Montreal.  In July 1922, Sarah crossed the border at St Albans, Vermont and settled in Boston. Sarah and Sam had 4 children, Lillian, born 26 Apr 1923, Morris, born in 1925, Jeanette, born 29 Jun 1926 and Gloria, born in 1935.

Joseph and Fryma Gillick

The Gillick branch of the twins, Iosif  (Joseph) and Fryma  and their parents, Feiga and Iankel Gilik remain a mystery.

Both Iosif and Fryma were on the S.S. Megantic and arrived in Montreal, 24 Sep 1921. They both were heading for their cousin Leib Gilik ( Leib Avrumovitch Gillick) at 629 St. Urbain St., Montreal, Quebec. The Ocean Crossing has the name of their mother Feige in Ostropol.

Their 1922 Border crossing has them going to their Uncle Harry Bookbinder from Ostropol.

The LI-RA-MA Collection which had pictures of them gave both their birth dates as 1903 and the name of their father as Iankel and that he was deceased.

Another contact person whom they were headed for is hard to make out. Is the name Charles or a variation of Moshko ( which would be Moshe or Morris ) ? The address of 330 Charlevoix St is not one I have associated with anyone else. This remains a mystery.

Morris Gillick from Philadelphia

Family of Morris Gillick, father Hersh

Morris ( Moshko ) born 1890, his wife Bessie  (Busya) Lapida,  born 1889 and his son Harry ( Hershko ), born 30 May 1916 in Ostropol, left Novi Ligure, Italy, 13 Aug 1921 on S.S. Canada. They arrived in Montreal, 21 Aug 1921.  He was heading to his cousin, Leib Gilik ( Louis Gillick ) at 629 St Urbain St. His contact  from Ukraine was his Uncle Gedalia. Another son Benjamin ( Boris/ Boruch ) was born in Montreal, 4 Jun 1922.

The Border Crossing of Apr 1923 shows  the family crossing through St Albans, Vermont to Morris' brother Harry Gilik at 269a Vernon Ave, Brooklyn. The family lived on Leidy Ave in 1930 and their address was given in the 1940 Census as  4253 Leidy Ave in Philadelphia. Morris worked as a carpenter and metalworker.

Morris and Bessie died within 3 months of each other, Bessie, 16 Nov 1968 and Morris, 13 Feb 1969 in Philadelphia. The translations of Hebrew on their gravestones are Morris Gillick - Moshe son of Hershel and Bessie Gillick - Batya daughter of Pinchas.  Their son Benjamin died earlier, 7 Jan 1966 in Philadelphia.

So this branch has 2 brothers Hersh and Gedalia. Hersh had 2 sons, Morris and also Harry who used the name Gillis in the 1915 NY State Census. Morris named his first born Hershko, born 30 May 1916 so it seems probable that Morris' father would have died before 1916.

Gillicks in New Jersey

A branch of Gillicks in New Jersey; another Sophie, another Joseph

Family of Michel Gillick and Feige Wexler

Michel Gillick and Feige Wexler had 4 children, Sophie, Sura, Joseph, Minnie/ Ramona

Sophie married Jacob Melrod and had 2 children, Max and Rose / Ruth. What happened to them? I can not find any more records for them.

Sophie and Jacob left Southhampton, England on the S.S. Aquitania,  23 April and arrived 1 May 1921. Max was born in 1922 and Rose/ Ruth was born in 1925 in New Jersey.

Here Lies
Bat Sheva (Bathsheba) daughter of Mr. Michal
24th Adar, 5740. May her soul be bound up for life eternal.

    Here Lies
Jonah, son of Mr. Yehuda the Levite
Died on the 1st of Tevet, 5722. May his soul be bound up for life eternal.

Sophie's sister, Sura, born about 1900, was on the same ship. She also left Southampton, England on the S.S. Aquitania, 23 Apr 1921 and arrived 1 May 1921. Her mother Feiga was her contact in Ostropol. What was Sura's life like after she arrived?

Mother Feiga, born about 1869 and her daughter Minnie left Southampton, England on the S.S. Ausonia, 27 Oct 1928 and arrived in Quebec CIty, 5 Nov 1928. They gave Joseph, son/brother as the person they were heading to, on 37 Alexander St in Sherbrooke.

Joseph married Betty Flax, 27 May 1934 and they had a daughter Anita, born 1937.  What happened to Anita?

Minnie married Samuel Kent and had 2 children, Harold and Ira. What happened to Harold and Ira?
The 1940 Census has the families of Joseph and his sister Minnie and their mother living side by side on Morton Street in Newark, Essex, New Jersey. Joseph worked in a dry goods store and Samuel, Minnie's husband, worked as an insurance agent.

Bessie Rivka Gillick

Jeanne Naomi Manster, born 11 Oct 1913, married Sam Beloff, born 19 Aug 1904, on 19 Jan 1943.
Her mother was Bessie Rivka Gillick, born 1889 in Ostropol and died 25 Jun 1939.
From Bessie’s gravestone, I found out that her father’s name was Yosef Yehuda. How is he connected?

    Important woman

Shaia ( Sam ) Gillick

Shaia/ Sam Gillick and his wife Bathsheva Horowitz named their oldest son Yekutiel Leib (Louis ) Gilick, spelled with 1 L. Shaia's father's name was Yekutiel Leib so that would mean that he died before 1896.  Louis was born in 1896 and died 29 Feb 1936.

According to Shaia's Ocean Crossing , he was born in 1856 and died 6 Aug 1954 in Montreal, Quebec. He and his wife, Bathsheva ( Sara ) Horowitz, born in 1874, sailed on the S.S. Montrose from Warsaw and arrived in Quebec, 23 Jun 1923. Bathsheva died 17 Aug 1955.

So in the family I now know 3 Gillick branches who named their son Louis.

Howard Gillick described his grandparents:

I know our family was quite wealthy as they owned a flour mill but lost everything when the communists took over and they had to leave. I think it was a lot like Fiddler on the Roof but a matriarchal system as my grandfather was always studying Torah. It was my grandmother and her children who ran the business.

I remember a lot. I saw them( grandparents) every Sunday. I was eight when they died. My grandmother was very warm, friendly and intelligent. My grandfather was very stern, distant, timid and very very religious. Yes he had siblings, I think they lived in the States.

Through the Hebrew translated from Shaia’s gravestone, I found out that Shaia's father was Yekutiel Leib.

The obituary of another son Marck ( spelled this way ) told me of 3 other children, Avrum, Elke and Boruch who were not mentioned to me when I had asked about the family members.

One of the 12 children was Sonia and Howard Gillick told me about his aunt’s life and the extent of the effect of meeting her had on him.

My Aunt Sonia, as my father and his siblings, had status for entry into Canada as Russian refugees. My Aunt married my Uncle en route to Canada, He was a Polish refugee so they were no longer considered Russian and quotas for Poles were filled that year. Cuba and Argentina were the 2 countries allowing entries for Poles that year and as my uncle had some relatives there, they chose the latter. At that time, Argentina was richer and attracted more immigrants than Canada! The idea was that they would eventually move to Canada but they never did.

She married Shlomo Kaplan on leaving Europe and they settled in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She had 3 children Sara, Berta and Samuel. Berta married Julio Cesar Solla. They had four children, two of them moved to the States. Sara Solla lives in Chicago and Emilio Solla in NY

She came twice to Montreal. She stayed for a few months each time, in 1953-4 alone and in 1965 with my uncle. I can't remember if it was the Star or the Gazette, but in 1965 they did a whole page article about her and how she got separated from the rest of the family. She stayed at our house. I was fascinated by my Aunt who spoke Spanish.

I think living there made her very cosmopolitan, coming from a village in the Ukraine. Buenos Aires has always been a very sophisticated, cultured megalopolis, the Paris of South America. I think the change for her was more difficult than for her Montreal siblings. But she adapted very well: I found her and my uncle to be much more worldly, cultured and refined than us Montrealers. They also seemed not as Jewish-centric as us. They talked about going often to the opera in Buenos Aires. She was a great cook and besides knowing all the Jewish recipes, she whipped up all sorts of Italian dishes and pizza. This in Montreal in 1954!

Camlot and Rich Family

Etta Gillick Camlot, mother of  7 children and unknown Ancestral Link

Fanny Gillick, daughter of Yehuda Leib ( Louis Gillick) from Sherbrooke, married a cousin Fred Camlot.

Left to Right:

Jean Rosen Gillick, husband Sid Gillick, Fanny Gillick Camlot, husband Fred Camlot, my grandparents, Meyer Endler and  Sophie Gillick

Fred Camlot’s mother‘s name was Etta Gillick
(her father had the name of Abraham Gillick). Etta’s husband’s name was Israel.
Israel and his wife were mentioned as parents in the July marriage record of son Jack without notes of being deceased; in Sept 1933 at son Frederick's marriage, both were noted as deceased.

Israel's birth name was Reich or Rich. To avoid going into the army, he was adopted by a Kamlut couple who didn't have any children. When his children came to North America, they changed their name from Kamlut to Camlot.

Camlot Family and Rich Family

Israel and Etta had 7 children. The oldest Charlie Camlot married a first cousin Rose Lillian Rich This leads to the mystery of the Reich / Rich origin and how they are related. Is Rose’s father Michael a brother to Israel?
Michael Rich, born in 1866, arrived 28 Aug 1896 in New York on the S.S. Normannia at age 28. He was living with his wife Sophie and daughters Rose and Mollie with boarder Sam Gillman at 440 Manton St, Philadelphia
Sophie Camlot, another of the Camlot siblings, left Antwerp, Belgium on the S.S.Lapland Red Star Line on 4 Aug 1920 and arrived on 14 Aug 1920. She gives her contact person whom she was heading for as her Uncle Michael Rich at 440 Manton St , Philadelphia
Sophie's sister , Sarah's April 1923's Border Crossing has the contact person as her cousin Maurice Rich, a son of Michael Rich.

Isaak Schwartzman and wife Klara

 Remember your friends

  Tashkent, 10 August

Meyer Endler's mother, Machle Schwartzman and Isaak's father were siblings. That leads me to believe that Isaak's family name is Schwartzman and that his father could be Moshe.

Kastan Family

Here are five pictures of the Kastan family. I only have some names and do not know anything about them. The first three are of Ethel with her husband and her mother. The fourth has Anna and "Grandma", Nov 1923 and the fifth has Harold Kastanovitz, 7 months old.

Ida Rudinberg

Years ago my sister asked our grandfather who these people in the picture postcards were and for this woman he told her that she was his girlfriend. There was another copy of the same picture, the other one dated 23 Jul 1909. The other two pictures have Ida ...inberg and Ida . The women bear a resemblance to the first. Who knows who the man is in the second picture and whether the date is correct for 1927?

Picture on Milan postcard

In 1973- 1974 while on a trip to Europe, my grandfather asked me to look up a close relative of his who lived in Milan. I did go to a munipal office while I was in Milan and was told that she had recently died. Sadly I no longer have any information. This picture postcard of this couple was done in a studio in Milan. Could the woman  be his close relative? She also resembles the other picture here and the picture of Aunt Shifra.
