Sophie Gillick







My grandmother Sophie Gillick (Sosa/ Sossie Rivka) was born in Ostropol, Ukraine on 24 Feb 1892. She died 6 Feb 1972 in Montreal, Quebec. She was the daughter of Abraham Gillick and Gittel Basman.











Sophie married Meyer Endler in Sherbrooke, Quebec on 25 Jul 1915.
According to the Canadian Passenger Lists she arrived in Quebec City on the S.S. Pallanza on 29 Sep 1913. Her name on this record was Sossie Gilik.




Leib ( Louis )Avrumovitch ( son of Avrum ) Gillick, my grandmother's brother was born 14 May 1880 in Ostropol, Ukraine. 

Louis married Bessie ( Pesia ) in Jul 1907. She was born in 1884. They had 3 children, Fannie, born 20 Jun 1908,  Saul ( Zeisie ), born 22 Jun 1911 and Mitzi, born 24 Aug 1915


He left Liverpool on 19 Mar 1921 and arrived with his family in St John, New Brunswick on 29 Mar 1921 on S.S. Minnedosa.

His mother, a widow, Gittel Basman, born about 1859 in Ostropol, Ukraine,  also immigrated with him. He was destined to his sister Sophie and brother-in-law Meyer at 89 Alexander St, Sherbrooke, Quebec.

His LI-RA-MA Passport has his address as 629 St Urbain St., Montreal, Quebec

Louis and his family immigrated to Philadelphia on 27 Jul 1922
He was naturalized as an American on 29 Mar 1928 and formerly changed his name from Leib to Louis. He worked as a jeweller and watch-maker.








Ethel ( Etla ), my grandmother's sister was born 9 Mar 1895.
The story goes that her father would not allow her to immigrate and her fiancé Charles Ring waited 10 years for her.
Ethel left Antwerp on 3 Feb 1921 and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on 15 Feb 1921 on S.S Finland. She named a cousin Sonia Fillikop in Ostropol.  She was headed for her cousin Max Sussman at 949 Franklin St, Philadelphia.
Ethel married Charles Ring in 1921 in Philadelphia. Charles was born 15 Nov 1890. He worked as a pharmacist. Their daughter Martha was born 26 Jun 1922.
